A rocky stretch of roaring rapids along the Watauga River, known to the locals as Sycamore Shoals, has been a significant historic landmark for more than four hundred years. The National Historic Landmark is home of numerous critical events forming the American frontier. The beautiful park was once home to Native Americans and today features historic milestones such as Fort Watauga. Not only does the park offer pristine mountain views with rolling green hill, Sycamore Shoals is also home to Fort Watauga, known best as Fort Caswell. The fort was long used by settlers to intercept Native American attacks and the tension between the settlers and Indians was agitated greatly with the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. The Annual Siege at Fort Watauga will take place on May 17 and May 18 this spring, and the reenactment of the battle provides a little living history that the whole family will enjoy. The reenactment includes several mini-dramas, living history talks, and demonstration of 18th century life.
Visitors can take a step back into the 1770s and enjoy observing the struggles of the British Tories and American Whigs. Sycamore Shoals State Park also offers several other outdoor activities such as hiking and out-doors dramas. The visitor center provides a theater screening a short documentary of the history surrounding and shaping Sycamore Shoals. The park is open throughout the year and the hours run Monday thru Saturday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm and Sunday, 1:00 pm – 4:30 pm.
